Check out Western Canada’s largest amusement park!

Many people have lived in Alberta their whole life and have never been to Calaway Park! Just a few minutes East of Calgary on the Trans-Canada Highway, Calaway Park is renowned as Western Canada’s largest amusement park. It’s a fairly easy road trip from many places in Alberta, especially Southern and Central locations. You may have even driven past it numerous times when you’ve headed to Canmore, Banff or the Rocky Mountains. You can see the large green and pink roller coaster from your car window!

A theme park in Alberta with rides, entertainment and fun!

If you are looking for a really memorable family-adventure this summer that is reasonably priced and entertaining for all ages, add Calaway Park to your summer road trip bucket list. Calaway Park can easily be done in one day. I know many people who drive 3-4 hours, spend the day there, and drive back home that same evening. This is a great way to avoid the costs of a hotel room.

Or if you are road tripping to other parts of Alberta (or going onward to other provinces), Calaway Park is a great stop on your itinerary. If you are camping there is a great campground right on site! They also offer many accommodation packages with partner hotels in Calgary and area.

Here are some of my favourite things about Calaway Park.

Calaway Park is fun for all ages. We have been going there since my kids have both been babies. There are rides that accommodate all ages and levels, plus there are games and shows such as dancing, singing and theatre. We have gone with children aged 0-16+ and they have all found something they really enjoyed.

One-pay gate pass. They make it so easy because you pay one fee at the gate and enjoy unlimited rides and entertainment for the entire day. They also have great deals on season passes and often offer online discounts and group rates. We find the prices to be so reasonable for a day of family fun.

Clean and friendly. We have always found Calaway Park to be extremely clean and the staff to be professional and friendly in all areas. We also love that it feels like a very safe and family-orientated environment.

Super fun rides for all levels. If you’re an adrenaline junky, there are some thrill rides for you! Or if you prefer something relaxing, they have some tamer rides that will put a smile on your face. We love how they have the giant swings for the big kids, but they also have mini swings for the toddlers. It makes it easy to give everyone a chance to try something fun.

Not too big, not too small! We love that Calaway Park is large enough to spend the entire day (or even a weekend) exploring, but it’s not so big that it’s overwhelming. It’s hard to get lost and once you spend a few hours there you’ll have the layout figured out!

If you’re thinking about exploring Calgary, here are some really fun things to do in Calgary with the kids.

Can London Be Your Next Budget Holiday?

Contributed by Anuja from WeTraveler

London has been one of my favorite cities ever since I visited 10 years back. A few things which I liked the most was its climate, rich historical culture, recreational parks, well-connected trains and world-class attractions. I cannot forget its nightlife and the most amazing shopping areas. While visiting London on a budget may seem daunting, it is definitely do-able.

To achieve all of this you will definitely have to dig a big hole in your pocket as London is notoriously expensive! Therefore, I would suggest that you plan well in advance in case this destination is on your mind. This is a guide for many free attractions in London, as well as paid ones, which are worth visiting. Start planning your holiday to London!

Tips for a budget holiday in London:

Get accommodation at some relatives or a friends place (if it is possible)

Try and stay at a PG, hostel or Air B&B

Carry a sufficient amount of food and snacks

How to visit London on a budget.

Here are some things to see and do in London if you’re on a budget. My first day in the city started with attractions which can be explored for free, followed by the must-see paid attractions, nightlife, hang out places and shopping.

1. Big Ben

This is one of the oldest and iconic towers of London. Since this is in the city itself, you can notice a lot of hustle and bustle in and around it. It is usually very crowded as it is very popular among tourists. There is a giant bell inside and the clock outside the tower right at the top is its highlight point. A lot of movies are shot at this location.

2. Buckingham Palace

This is the most famous address in London for centuries. The palace is home of the ‘Queen of London’. The best attraction is the Changing of the Guard which happens daily in summers around 10:45 am. The view of the parade is simply amazing! Tourists throng here in huge numbers just to get a glimpse. The palace is off Hyde Park where you can relax for a while before heading to the next destination.

Check out Free Tours By Foot for guided walking tours!

3. Tower Bridge

Yet another iconic piece of London and a popular spot for movies. The Tower Bridge in London is an artistic bridge that looks incredible from a distance, especially in the night. It overlooks the Thames River and opens up when a big vessel passes through it. You can simply take a walk on the bridge in the evening and admire its beauty. There is an option of going on the top for a better view, however, you can get a 360 view of the entire bridge from the elevated corridor next to it. An evening cruise in the Thames river is possible in the case that interests you.

Here are some interesting facts about the Tower Bridge in London.

4. St. Paul’s Cathedral

This is one of the most beautiful churches in London. Closer to the Thames river, the giant dome on the top is a marvel in itself. Take the entry fee to head straight on the top and experience some incredible views of the city and the Thames river. A lot of high profile weddings take place in St. Paul’s Cathedral including Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

5. London Eye

The London Eyeis close to Big Ben and near the River Thames. Unlike the previously mentioned historical attractions, the London Eye is quite entertaining. It is a giant observation wheel which rotates very slowly giving a 360 view of the city. The view from the top of the wheel is quite stunning. Since the wheel doesn’t rotate too fast even kids and senior citizens can experience this (unless someone has acrophobia.)

TIP: The London Eye has an entry fee, however, I would suggest experiencing this if you are a first timer.

6. Windsor Castle

Located in the heart of the city, Windsor Castle is one of the oldest and largest castles in the world. The castle has a long walk of approx. three-miles with nice greenery all along. It is considered as the second home of the Queen and has a royal history and antique furnishings inside.

7. Trafalgar Square

This is a nice and vibrant place in London. You will notice a couple of statues and structures close by. It is also surrounded by museums, galleries and historical attractions. In the evening, you may find some entertaining acts performed by artists. It is advisable to spend some time here and sit to the elevated stairs in the evening.

Here are some ideas for what to see at Trafalgar Square.

8. Madame Tussauds London

Madame Tussauds is a wax museum with 250 figures of famous personalities. It is the most popular tourist attraction in London. It offers complete family entertainment as clicking pictures with these big “stars” is absolute fun. You will find the waxworks of personalities such as the Queen, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Tom Cruise, Usain Bolt, Johnny Depp. Micheal Jackson, etc.

TIP: The museum is quite big so you need to cover it fast without spending much time in any one section. Spend around 2-3 hours here and proceed for your tour.

9. Piccadilly Circus

Your trip to London cannot be complete without exploring the nightlife. The large billboard and neon signs at Piccadilly Circus are huge and comparable to the Times Square of New York. This is a busy street with lots of restaurants, cafes, shopping areas, bars and clubs which are flocked to by tourists and locals regularly.

TIP: Visit this street in the evening to see the lights glitter and feel the vibrancy of this place.

Calgary is the fifth largest city in Canada and also ranked at the top for sunniest Canadian cities! The city is diverse with plenty of activities and fun for all ages. If your planning on taking a trip to Calgary for the weekend or even a few days, here is a great list of ideas for a fun family getaway, especially in the warmer months!

Choose a great hotel for kids in Calgary.

Plan your trip by having a great home base! Choose a Calgary hotel with waterslides! Our favorite hotel is Best Western Port o’ Call which has two super fun waterslides and a fantastic kiddie pool area for children under 5. We have tried other hotels in Calgary but always return here. Our kids spend hours in the pool and we feel relaxed knowing they are in a fun and safe swimming environment! The hotel offers a great breakfast buffet, lunch and dinner service plus a coffee shop with snack bar. You won’t have to go far to make sure the kids are fueled up before or after all the swimming!

Spend the day at Calgary Zoo.

It’s so easy and fun to spend many hours at Calgary Zoo. Voted as one of Canada’s top tourist destinations, Calgary Zoo has amazing animal experiences. They have nearly 1,000 animals across 119 species including pandas, elephants, giraffes, penguins and much more. The kids will enjoy exploring the prehistoric park with towering dinosaurs all around. There is a huge playground, plenty to eat and drink, souvenir shops and nice grassy areas and gardens to take a break.

Ride the day away at Calaway Park.

Calaway Park is Western Canada’s largest outdoor amusement park. There are 32 rides with levels for all-ages, plus there are carnival games, exciting live shows and plenty of delicious treats. It’s easy to spend the entire day at Calaway Park, and the value for the money is excellent. They offer a one-time pay at the gate fee, allowing for unlimited rides and shows for the day. The park is clean and family-friendly throughout.

Zoom with Skyline Luge Calgary.

Skyline Luge Calgary is located at Canada Olympic Park. Ride the chair lift to the top of the hill and then grab a downhill kart to descend down the track. Downhill karting is a unique, wheeled gravity ride that provides a fun-filled adventure activity suitable for riders of all ages and experience. Smaller riders can go with an adult.

Head to the top of Calgary Tower.

Looking down from the glass flour observation deck at Calgary Tower.

For beautiful 360 degree views of the city, mountains and prairies, head up to the top of Calgary Tower. Give the kids a one-of-a-kind experience stepping onto the glass floor in the Observation Deck that looks directly down onto the streets! Not for the faint of heart, but definitely a memorable adventure. Grab a drink or bite to eat at Sky 360 Restaurant which revolves every 45 minutes! The kids will get a kick out of the fact that the restaurant is actually turning as they eat!

Fire up your imagination at Telus Spark Calgary

There is just so much to do at Calgary’s science centre, Telus Spark. Spend the day exploring over 100 exhibits and galleries with hands-on learning and really cool and unique demonstrations that share excitement about the world of science, technology and creativity. There is also an HD digital dome theatre and outdoor park for the kids to get fresh air and burn off energy!

Go back in time at Heritage Park.

Heritage Park is a historical park in southwest Calgary featuring a replica 1910 pioneer town. It is Canada’s largest living history museum with hundreds of exhibits, rides, shops, restaurants, daily demonstrations and activities. Just inside the gates, you can board a real steam engine train which will take you into town. Stroll down the main street and check out the old fashioned buildings and midway rides. There are farm animals, a settlement fort and aboriginal encampment. Workers are dressed up and in character to represent what life was like back in the ‘olden days!

Other fun things to do in Calgary.

One place we haven’t been yet but will be checking out soon is Granary Road located just south of Calgary. Granary Road offers 36 acres of activities, 3.5 kilometers of trails, a petting zoo and themed exhibits. There are a restaurant and year-round public market with vendors offering the best local products.

Like this post? Share it by pinning it on Pinterest!

If you need a retail fix, be sure to visit Cross Iron Mills shopping centre. It is the biggest one-level shopping centre in Alberta and home to many stores and outlets, a movie theatre, restaurants and food court. Our kids enjoy visiting Bass Pro Shop which is a huge outdoor-gear store. There are plenty of unique things to look at including a large aquarium located near the center of the store. On the north side of the mall, there is a neat kids play area for the little ones if they need a break from shopping!

Jasper is a beautiful alpine town in Canada framed by the snow-capped Canadian Rockies. It is an easy road-trip from Edmonton, Red Deer or Calgary; or an excellent place to stop for a night or two on your bigger Canadian adventure! In fact, Jasper was recently voted best ski town in North America by USA Today.

If you are
looking to breathe in some clean, fresh mountain air and just get away from “it
all”, Jasper is still fairly quaint and quiet in comparison to Banff. It’s a
great place to rest and recharge, or if you’re in for more adventure, a
wonderful home base for exploring Canada’s vast wilderness.

Weekend in
Jasper

We’ve spent many family weekends in Jasper during both the <g class="gr_ gr_15 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep gr-progress" id="15" data-gr-id="15">winter</g> and summer months. If you plan on going for two or three nights, here is a great little itinerary of things you can do with the kids.

1. Ski Marmot Basin

In the winter, Marmot Basin is a great place to take the family skiing. They offer lessons for the little ones on a nice, easy bunny hill. And for more advanced skiers or snowboarders, there are plenty of runs to enjoy on all types of terrain with spectacular scenery all around. We have been to many ski areas in the Canadian Rockies but Marmot Basin is our favorite one of all.

2. Take a flight with Jasper Skytram

The Jasper <g class="gr_ gr_10 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace" id="10" data-gr-id="10">Skytram </g><g class="gr_ gr_10 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Style multiReplace" id="10" data-gr-id="10"> is</g> the highest and longest aerial tramway in Canada. The seven-minute ride to the top is fun for the entire family and you will be rewarded with unbelievable views! Hike to the summit and be in awe of the scenery around you. There are great photo opportunities and the adventure of hiking at the top of a mountain is not one your family will forget. There is also a little restaurant at the top to refuel after the hike!

3. Explore Maligne Canyon

Maligne Canyon is the deepest slot canyon in Jasper National Park. The area has many waterfalls, underground stream outlets, <g class="gr_ gr_11 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="11" data-gr-id="11">and</g> incredible scenery everywhere you look. In winter, the waterfalls are frozen over and is a spectacular site. Enjoy ice walking, ice climbing and marveling at natures frozen wonders around them. In summer, enjoy hiking, bird watching and exploring the most interesting canyon in the Rockies. There are so many incredible photo opportunities and overall it’s a great learning experience for everyone including the kids.

There are a few tour companies in the area that provide guided tours and adventures, or you can discover the area on your own.

4. Walk the Town of Jasper

Jasper is not a huge town and families can enjoy an easy stroll through the main streets and browse through the many local shops. The kids will love you forever when you visit Candy Bear Lair and Ana Lea’s Candy Lane, both local sweet shops filled candy and treats. There are lots of stores offering really unique items and souvenirs, and many great local restaurants and coffee shops to try out as well!

Visit the Jasper Municipal Library

We recently stumbled across the Jasper Municipal Library when walking around the town. There is a really cool area upstairs for the kids with lots of books, games, and crafts. We spent a <g class="gr_ gr_71 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="71" data-gr-id="71">couple</g> hours there reading, playing and making crafts with the free materials they provided.

Across the street from the library is a great park with lots of different styles of equipment. We ended up spending the afternoon enjoying both the library and the <g class="gr_ gr_23 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="23" data-gr-id="23">park</g>.

Every time we visit Jasper we always discover
something new. What are your favorite things to do in Jasper with kids? Let me
know in the comments below!

We have been lucky to go on several trips to Disney since our kids were preschoolers. We had a great time with our kids at every age. How we experienced Disney changed with their ages, but it has always been positive. Here are some things to know before visiting Disney theme parks.

What is the best age to take kids to Disney?

I would say between three and nine years old were the most magical for my kids. They were mostly into Disney Princesses, Cars, Tinkerbell, and characters from Disney shows.

Disney with young kids.

Our children were three and five years old on our first trip to Disney World. My husband and I look back on this as one of our favorite family trips of all time. The kids were so excited by the characters, the rides and the atmosphere; it truly seemed like the happiest place on earth. My husband and I had never been to Disney World – it was just as magical for us!

Disney with teenagers.

Our kids are now 12 and 14 years old and our most recent trip to Disney World was still fabulous! Before we had to work around character dinners and meet/greets, but this last time it was all about the rides. Exciting bigger rides too, like Tower of Terror, Aerosmith’s Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, and Everest (our favorite at <g class="gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="7" data-gr-id="7">Animal</g> Kingdom). It was fun, great bonding (we strategized as a family), no drama or tears and we easily powered through from open to close! It also cost us less as this was the first trip where they didn’t care about Disney merchandise!

When is the Best Time to go to Disney?

Free Disney Stock Photos from Magic Guides.com

When we plan our trips it is usually based on not missing too much school (especially now that they are older), and avoiding crowded parks!

Touring Plans

We do our best to avoid big crowds and long waits by using Touring Plans to check out the weeks we are considering and eventually what days we go to which park. The subscription is $20 and well worth it as they predict crowd levels at the Parks based on planned events, holidays, the economy and which park had magic-hour that day. We plan out our days based on avoiding the longest lines and use the Lines App once on site. You can even use it for an itinerary which we typically follow as a loose guideline.

Choose a slower or off-season time.

Choosing a ‘slower’ or more off-season time to visit typically means there are discounts to be had. For value and decent crowds look at January into early February, mid-August to end of September, and early November to mid-December (avoid Thanksgiving). If you go after mid-November you can enjoy the beautiful Christmas decorations!

We have been to Disney in November, February <g class="gr_ gr_8 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="8" data-gr-id="8">and</g> June. June in Orlando was very hot, very busy and I would not do again. If you don’t mind it being a little cooler, January or the beginning of February is one of the best times to go for a quieter park, as is November. Although the weather is cooler, it’s still a nice escape from winter in Edmonton (AND it wasn’t cold enough to stop us from going in the pool!)

Book Character Dinners and Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique early!

Free Disney Stock photos at Magicguides.com

To ensure you get dinner with your child’s most beloved characters, and the venue you most desire, you’ll need to book early, same with Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. If you are not sure about spending the time or money on these experiences, I’d recommend it at least once if you can. We did the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique when they were three and five. They both loved it – my daughter got to be a princess for the day, and my son was just as happy with his <g class="gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace" id="7" data-gr-id="7">colourful</g> hair, sword & shield, and the attention that followed.

I suggest booking your appointment for early in the day in order to enjoy it longer, and coordinate it with any special dinners with the Disney Princesses!

Use a Stroller at Disney.

I would 100% recommend a stroller for 4 and under, even if you don’t still use a stroller at home. It is a lot of walking, especially at Disney World. We brought our own for a few days and rented a few times. Personally, we found it less of a hassle to just rent a stroller. It was nice to not push it around all day – we waited until early afternoon to rent. Both of my kids napped in the stroller which was a lifesaver on long days when we stayed for the fireworks. There is a ton of stroller parking, just have something to make your stroller recognizable!

Bring a Backpack to Disney

We always bring at least one backpack with us to carry water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, and jackets/sweaters. Bringing water and snacks helps cut back on costs and is nice to have during the long lineups. It is also important to consider layers – early mornings can be chilly and it cools off fast when the sun goes down!

At Disney you can bring your backpack with you on rides which is great (at Universal Studios we had to rent a locker for most rides). We did rent a locker on a few occasions (to avoid carrying around 4 water bottles and sweaters all day). We would rent for the morning and take it out for the afternoon/evening.

Use Disney Fast Passes & Child Swap

We were surprised how many people at the Disney Parks were not aware of Fast Passes or Child Swap/Rider Switch. To make the most of your time, I’d recommend reading up on this before you go. You can book your Fast Passes online 30 days in advance of your trip (even longer if you are staying at a Disney resort).

If you will be using child swap, this article from WDW Prep School is a
great resource to maximize use of Fast Passes in conjunction with child swap.

Should You Stay at a Disney Resort?

We have never stayed at a Disney Resort, but if I was to do it over again I would have when they were younger. I wish we had for our first trip when they were under five as it was very hot and the kids just wanted the pool. If we had been staying at a Disney Resort we’d have gone back to the hotel for a swim and nap! There are also some pretty good perks when staying at a Disney Resort:

They will take your packages to your room (no carrying them around all day!).

Save money on a car rental. Use Disney’s transportation to the Parks and the airport.

The early magic hour access – game changer!

You can book your Fast Passes further in advance.

Other advantages like advance booking for Character dining.

Use Photo Pass and
Buy Memory Maker (at least once!)

At the Disney Parks, there are many photo opportunities where <g class="gr_ gr_61 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="61" data-gr-id="61">staff</g> is set up taking photos. They will hand you a Photo Pass card (or will add to your Photo Pass card if you already have one). If you purchase Memory Maker you get unlimited photo downloads of all your photos taken at the Park, plus other perks. Last time we did this, the Memory Maker was the better deal as it was $20/photo to purchase individual photos and we easily had more than 10 photos that we wanted. It was also nice to have family photos I was actually in instead of playing photographer. If you buy Memory Maker three days in advance of your visit to the Park, you get a discount and if you stay at a Disney resort there are extra photo opportunities.

I hope these Disney World and Disneyland tips help inspire your trip! If you have any questions, please leave a comment below!

Las Vegas: Guide for An Unforgettable Girls Trip!

Planning a getaway with your besties to Las Vegas? You’ve made a great choice! Vegas is such an fun place to let loose with your best girlfriends. You’ll have so many diverse experiences and create memories for a lifetime in the city that never sleeps.

If it’s your first time going to Vegas, you’ll probably be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of info on the web about things to see and do. All of that aside, I wanted to create a list of the basics that will help you enjoy your Vegas vacation, no matter what you choose to do.

Here are 10 tips to make your girls weekend in Vegas an unforgettable experience!

1. Choose a hotel on the Las Vegas Strip.

For my first girls trip to Vegas, my girlfriends and I got so pumped when we found a great deal online! After all, the less we spend on flight and hotel, the more spending money we’d have to enjoy all Vegas has to offer. We arrived at our hotel only to realize it was not on the Las Vegas Strip, and it was more like a quiet apartment highrise with no gaming or amenities. It definitely wasn’t the glamorous Vegas experience we were looking for. So, I urge you to do some research on where your hotel is located in reference to the Strip, and what amenities your hotel offers. If you’re looking for luxury hotels, try The Bellagio, Wynn, Venetian or Cosmopolitan. Here is a great list of the top 10 most luxurious hotels in Vegas. If you’re looking for ultra-modern, high end experience, the Aria is fantastic. If you like entertainment and a bit more ‘middle of the road’ experience without needing over the top luxury, the MGM Grand is impressive and tons of fun. There are so many amazing hotels, here is a great list of the 16 best hotels in Las Vegas according to Conde Naste Traveler.

2. Bring comfortable shoes for walking in Las Vegas.

The first time I went to Vegas, everyone told me to bring comfortable shoes. I shrugged it off. After all, I had all these fancy shoes I wanted to put to good use, and what better place than in Vegas? Well, the first 24 hours in Sin City left my poor feet with so many sinful blisters and me vowing to wear slippers for the rest of time. People aren’t kidding when they say to pack comfortable shoes for Vegas! Take this advice seriously, my friends. For the daytime, pack your most comfy sneakers or walking shoes. And for the evening, find some dressy shoes that still have serious comfort built in. Naturalizers, anyone?

3. Pack casual and fancy clothes.

Yes, anything goes in Vegas! That’s what makes it such a melting pot of fashion and fun. I recommend packing your most comfy and casual clothes for exploring in the daytime, and take the time glam it up a little (or a lot!) to really get in the spirit of those fun-filled Vegas nights. Bring a variety of outfits and you can dress according to what you’ve planned for that day or evening. You’ll definitely want to doll up if you plan on heading out to a high end restaurant, or checking out one (or many) of the amazing clubs in Las Vegas. One thing is for sure, in Vegas you can wear your fanciest wardrobe pieces (think sequins and bling) and you’ll fit right in!

4. Dance the night away. Skip the club crawl.

Speaking of clubs, Vegas nightlife is like nothing you’ve seen! There are clubs, bars and pubs for every genre; there is guaranteed to be something you’ll like. So remember, you’re with your girlfriends, throw caution to the wind and dance the night away! After all, how often do you get to do that at home?

On girls trips to Vegas, my friends and I tried out a couple of club crawls that gave us a taste of the different nightlife options. However, I would not recommend bothering with the club crawls. We would end up skipping the line-up and cover charge even if we weren’t with the group. We noticed the clubs would generally let groups of women in without having to wait too long in line. Another reason to skip the club crawl is we’d end up having so much fun at one club that we didn’t want to leave!

5. Try the many world renowned restaurants in Las Vegas!

On our first girls trip to Vegas, my besties and I ended up clubbing and shopping so much that we didn’t end up having a lot of time to try too many of the fantastic restaurants. Vegas is a culinary mecca – to go there and not try the world-renowned and celebrity chef restaurants is definitely a sin. So be sure to choose where you’ll dine each day and make reservations early so you can get in! Check out Open Table for a list of the best restaurants on the Las Vegas strip. Also, you can’t go to Vegas without trying a buffet, so be sure to put that on the list too! Here is a list of the best buffets in Las Vegas so you can start drooling now!

6. Tour the Las Vegas hotels.

No trip to Vegas is complete without strolling down Las Vegas Boulevard and wandering through the incredible hotels! Every Las Vegas Strip hotel is a feast for the senses, with magnificent themes and impressive architecture. Many hotels and casinos even have their own signature scent, so remember to breathe in and see which smell you like the most! Some people like the aromas so much they want to buy the scent of their favourite hotel or casino!

I love this DIY Walking Tour Guide to the Las Vegas strip to get you started. You may think you can do this all in one day, but your feet will tell you otherwise! So plan to break it up!

7. See a Vegas show (or a few!)

Las Vegas is known as the entertainment capital of the world. There are so many events and shows to choose from, so I recommend to start doing your research early! Here is a list of shows in Las Vegas that will get you started. No girls trip is complete without checking out Cirque du Soleil, David Copperfield, Blue Man Group, Magic Mike or Thunder Down Under (wink!).

8. Visit Fremont Street, Old Vegas.

Be sure to schedule in a visit to Fremont Street in Old Vegas. Just to clarify, Old Vegas is the same as downtown Vegas. Fremont street is an entertainment and gaming district that many locals and tourists love to visit so they can escape the Las Vegas Strip even for a few hours. The Fremont district can be a world on its own with tons of history and nostalgia on every corner. Definitely go through the historical hotels and casinos like the Golden Nugget and The Four Queens. You’ll find lots of cheap food and drinks, and this is the place to get all of your Vegas souvenirs. Here is an awesome guide to visiting Old Vegas and Fremont Street.

9. Avoid the hangover!

Ah yes, an epic night out in Vegas is one we all see in the movies and daydream about experiencing! After all, Vegas never sleeps, so when we’re finally there, why should we? I had to put this on the list – it is so much fun to indulge in Vegas, but I urge you to stay hydrated, eat some good meals and be sure to watch out for your girlfriends too! Drink water after every drink, and grab a bite to eat in the wee hours (you’ll have no trouble finding something open, or even order room service!) You definitely won’t want to waste a day on a hangover in Vegas, there is just too much to see and do that every minute counts.

10. Sleep is for the weak. (Just kidding!)

But seriously, you’re not going to Vegas to sleep. If that’s the kind of girls trip you’re looking for, I’d recommend a spa retreat in the mountains! So round up your girlfriends, book your trip to Vegas and have the best time! Remember, you can sleep when you get home!

How to Save Money for Vacation – it’s easier than you think!

Let’s face it, taking a vacation is costly these days. Factor in travelling with kids, and the costs are enough to make you think you’ll never be able to take a dream vacation again! If you’re longing for the days when budget travel was easy because you were just travelling alone and kicking back in hostels, or you were travelling as a couple and finding dirt-cheap deals, you are not alone. Don’t despair, there are ways you can save for your next family vacation but you’ll have to use a little imagination and a lot of dedication!

Here are some great tips on how to save money for a vacation. You’ll be taking your next trip sooner than you think!

1. Open up a savings account that’s dedicated to your vacation savings.

When you open up a vacation savings account, there are a few key things you can do. Set up automatic payments so you can passively put money into the account. You likely won’t even notice that money is being transferred. Even if it’s $20 a week or $200 a month, every little bit helps! Choose an interest-bearing account so your money can grow even a little bit. Talk to your bank representative about the best options for your account, such as a TFSA account. Also choose an account plan that deters you from withdrawing money from the account by charging you a higher transaction fee. This will make it less likely that you dip into the account.

2. Slash your convenience food/drink budget.

Yes, sadly I’m talking about slowing down on your daily Starbucks coffee runs! If you’re like most North Americans, you’re probably guilty of hitting up the drive-thrus on those busy days, especially if you’re parents with children keeping you always on the run. Or perhaps you are too busy (or lazy!) to pack a lunch to bring to work, so opt for eating out most days of the week. You’ll be surprised how much it adds up! Slash the coffee runs and start making your own lunch and take that money and put it into your vacation savings account. Even if it’s $10 a week that you save from not going through drive-thrus or the coffee shop, it will make a huge difference.

3. Get a credit card that earns you travel points. Use it for everything!

Consider using a credit card that earns you travel points for all of your expenditures. There are many cards that will even give you thousands of free points or miles as a sign-up bonus. I recommend using one credit card instead of having different cards. For example, my husband and I both use CIBC Aventura cards and all of our points are accumulated together. We use our cards for everything including large household purchases, some utilities (phone, internet etc.) business expenses, groceries, gas and car expenses, even small purchases that are under $5.

Get more points by tapping into friends/family purchases.

If you have friends and family that don’t collect points but are making large purchases, ask if you can put their purchase on your credit card so you can earn their points. They simply reimburse you for the purchase in cash, cheque, e-transfer, or can even go to their bank and transfer the money directly to your credit card! For example, my parents bought a new furnace for their home that cost a few thousand dollars. We paid for the furnace with our credit card and they transferred us the money. We earned thousands of points just for that one purchase!

We like the CIBC Aventura card because we can use it on airlines, hotels and car rentals around the world. Also when we signed up for the card there was a bonus of 15,000 points which was an excellent reward.

There are many different credit cards that offer great programs, so do your research to see what works best for you. I love this article that shows a great comparison of travel rewards cards in Canada: Best Travel Credit Cards in Canada.

4. Take advantage of AirMiles, Aeroplan and other rewards cards

When you collect points using Airmiles, Aeroplan or other rewards programs such as PC Rewards, Shoppers Optimum etc., these points can help you offset some of your other purchases such as groceries, personal care items and save you a ton of money! For Airmiles and Aeroplan you can also use their points on travel costs such as flights, hotels and car rentals. Overall, these points programs are an excellent way to save money and get you closer to reaching your bucket list trip!

5. Embrace minimalism and sell unused items online.

Minimalism and recycling are taking our society by storm! This is a trend that is definitely worth jumping on board and implementing for life! Don’t let your unused material items sit in cupboards and closets to collect dust for years. Even if you can sell items for $5 here or $10 there, that money can go directly into your vacation savings account. You’ll be surprised at just how much stuff you can let go, and how valuable it is to another person who can use it right away.

Go through your home and garage and downsize your unused material items. There are many online neighbourhood swap and sell groups, or websites/apps such as Kijiji that make it very easy to sell your items.

Airplanes are dirty. Here are some tips for staying healthy on your flight.

Airplanes top the list as breeding grounds for dirt and germs. It makes sense that they would, seeing that they are basically small, enclosed metal tubes housing hundreds of people together for a lengthy time period! CBC Marketplace recently conducted a study which determined five of the dirtiest places on an aircraft. Aside from the obvious places that come to mind such as the toilet, sink or floor, you may be surprised to learn that the headrest is the dirtiest spot on an aircraft, followed by the seat pocket, washroom handle, tray table and seatbelt.

Now, combine this with cold and flu season, and you may be thinking about putting yourself in a bubble or cancelling your flight altogether!

Can you avoid getting sick on a plane?

Don’t worry, you’re not doomed! Here are some ways you can protect yourself from catching the cold or flu on the airplane.

Tips for staying healthy on a plane – start preparing a few weeks before your flight:

Take Oil of Oregano. Oregano oil is a natural powerhouse for preventing cold, flu and many other health issues. You can find oregano oil or pills at any drug store, department store health section, health food store or online. If you have any health issues or on any medications, be sure to talk to a health practitioner to determine if the oil is safe for you to use!

Up your Vitamin C intake. There are so many health benefits of Vitamin C yet many of us are deficient. If you’re not already getting enough Vitamin C through your diet, supplement with tablets as well. Do this well before a trip and you will be boosting your immunity.

Remember to take your daily vitamin. Speaking of Vitamin C, if you aren’t already taking a daily vitamin, it definitely doesn’t hurt to start taking a multi-vitamin well in advance of your trip. Everything you can do to help your immune system will help your body stave off unwanted cold and flu germs on an aircraft.

How to not get sick from germs on the plane – do these things when you get on the plane:

As soon as you get to the seat, wipe everything – and I mean EVERYTHING – down with alcohol wipes. Other people might look at you funny at first, but I’ve had so many other passengers comment to me about what a great idea it is. They end up borrowing some of my alcohol wipes to do the same around their seat. Be sure to wipe down the seat, headrest, armrest, seatbelt, tray, window, wall and inside of the seat pocket.

Wash your hands and use hand sanitizer during and throughout the flight. I love the Bath and Bodyworks hand sanitizers because they are small and easy to pack.

Avoid the bathroom if possible. This is easier to do on short-haul flights! If you do have to use the bathroom, be sure to sanitize your hands when you get back to your seat.

Drink lots of water. It helps keep you hydrated and that’s always a good thing for your immune system!

Turn on the air vent. Many people turn off the air vent when they arrive at their seat, but according to research, you should actually leave it on! Here’s a great article from Travel + Leisure on Why You Should Think Twice Before Turning Off the Air Vent Above You on Your Next Flight.

When you arrive at your destination:

When you arrive at your accommodations, be sure to change your clothes and wash your hands and face. I would also recommend wiping down anything that you took out and used while on the plane. For example, your phone, tablet, laptop or books.

I hope these tips helped keep you healthy during your journey. Do you have anything that you do that I should add to this list and share with fellow travelers? Please leave a comment below.

Planning a trip to Kauai?

Traveling to Kauai soon? Or are you thinking about going to Hawaii but not quite sure which island to choose? Our favorite Hawaiian island is definitely the island of Kauai. Known as the garden island, Kauai offers stunning landscapes with lush tropical greenery, flowers, mountains, canyons, beaches, rivers and waterfalls. The island has a very laid-back vibe and ‘Aloha spirit’.

Best things to do in Kauai with kids.

If you’re taking your kids to Hawaii and looking for a vacation filled with a nice mix of relaxation and adventure, Kauai is the place to be! Of course, when traveling with young children, it’s important to know what you’re in for and how to keep them busy. Kauai offers the best of both worlds – enough activities to keep them busy, but a really laid back environment to keep everyone, including mom and dad, relaxed.

Top things to do in Kauai. Family-friendly and fun for the kids!

1. Poipu Beach

Poipu Beach is known as the best beach in America according to The Travel Channel. Located on the south shore of Kauai, Hawaii, Poipu Beach is made up of two beaches in a bay separated by a long point. There is a large protected, shallow area which is great for small children to safely splash around in, often with large sea turtles swimming nearby! The soft, light golden sand is fun to play in and explore, where you’ll often find a napping Hawaiian Monk seal (sometimes more than one!) There is also excellent snorkelling, and on the other side of the point there are gentle waves which are fun for body boarding or beginner surfing. For the older children you can sign them up for beginner surf lessons at one of the nearby kiosks. You’ll find all the amenities including washrooms, a small playground and a restaurant and store across the street.

2. Explore family-friendly beaches in Kauai

Kauai has so many beaches all within a fairly short driving distance. Part of the adventure is trying a different beach every day Every beach has something different to offer, with incredible scenery around it. Pack a cooler and your beach gear and go on a little road trip each day!. A few great beaches to put on the itinerary are: Salt Pond Beach, Anini Beach, Lydgate Beach and Baby Beach.

Here are a couple of links to family-friendly beaches recommended by other travelers.

Best Kauai beaches with Kids.

Best swimming beaches in Kauai for kids.

3. Visit Hanalei Bay

Hanalei Bay is found on the north shore of Kauai in the area of Princeville and is a must to spend some time exploring this historic area. The bay is the largest on the island with 3.2km of beaches with four beach parks to choose from. The best time to visit is in the summer months when the water is calmer, but the scenery is beautiful year round. If you are not already staying in this area, definitely make a day trip. Often hailed as one of the most beautiful places on earth, Hanalei Bay offers majestic mountain backdrops, gorgeous scenery, pretty beaches and unique local shops and restaurants.

4. Experience a Luau in Kauai

A trip to Hawaii isn’t complete until you have experienced a luau. We enjoyed the Smith Family Garden Luau but know there are many other wonderful options on the island of Kauai to choose from. Take a peek at some of the best luaus on Kauai here. At a luau you’ll enjoy trying authentic Hawaiian food, seeing the traditional dances and fire show, plus you’ll learn a lot about the history of Polynesian culture.

5. Plantation Tour on the Kilohana Plantation Railway

The train tour of the 105 acre Kilohana Plantation is a fun and interesting adventure for the entire family. This guided 40-minute train ride will let you see and learns about the many varieties of trees, vegetables, flowers and fruits of Kauai. The train stops and the kids will get a kick out of feeding the wild pigs, goats and sheep. There is also a restaurant and gift shop, easy to spend a few hours at this location.

6. Visit the Kauai Coffee Estate

Alright, I know kids don’t drink coffee, but this tour is a win-win for both parents and kids! At the Kauai Coffee Estate you can let the kids explore the outdoor trails and enjoy the fresh air. You can choose a guided tour or roam through on your own and see how coffee beans are grown, harvested and made into many delicious flavors of coffee. End off the tour with sampling different coffee flavors inside the shop. Don’t worry, there are ice cream and snacks for the kids too!

7. Visit Lydgate Farms for a Kauai chocolate tour

I haven’t personally done this yet, but have been told that the chocolate tour is for all the chocolate lovers in the family! A visit to Lydgate Farms looks like a delight for the senses, strolling through the botanical gardens and sampling of palm honey and vanilla beans. And the extensive chocolate tasting course sounds like a pretty sweet time!

8. Tour of Na Pali Coast

I put the tour of Na Pali Coast on this list for families with kids at least 5 and up. No visit to Kauai is complete without seeing the breathtaking Na Pali Coast. Razor-edged cliffs, waterfalls, green valleys and crashing waves in emerald blue waters is a truly magical sight to see, and there is no other way to see it than from the air, water or an intense hike. There are so many boat tours to Na Pali, but the key is to choose a tour that leaves from Hanalei (not Port Allen). When you choose a boat that leaves from Hanalei, you will reach Na Pali coastline in a matter of minutes rather than two or more hours. Depending on the tour company you choose, you will also have the opportunity for lunch or snacks on board, snorkeling or entering sea caves. It is wise to take motion-sickness medication before going on the tour as it can get quite wavy, but you’ll have a great experience if you and the kids are prepared in advance!

9. Spend time at Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort or Kauai Marriott Resort

The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort or Kauai Marriott Resort used to offer day passes to use their beautiful pool and facilities. I am not sure if they still do, but it would be worth finding out! The Grand Hyatt Kauai offers a 5-acre pool area with lazy river, saltwater lagoon, and waterslide, while the Marriott offers a huge pool and lovely beach. Bring the family to enjoy the day at one of these hotels, and if they don’t still offer the day passes, it would definitely be worth it to book a night or two at one of these resorts to enjoy their breathtaking facilities.

10. Go Ziplining in Kauai

If you’re looking for a bit more of an action-packed adventure, be sure to try ziplining. Ziplining lets you soar above the treetops, taking in the gorgeous landscapes while getting a bit of an adrenaline rush. It’s a really fun family activity for those who have older children. It’s safe, challenging and a wonderful bonding experience that creates memories for life. In Kauai, there are a few zipline companies, but the most recent I’ve done is Koloa Zipline which can accommodate kids aged 7 and up.

Have you been to Kauai with kids? Comment below and share your favorite places to visit, eat and play. I am always looking for new things to do when we return to Kauai with the kids!

Top 10 beaches in the world (I’ve found so far) that are safe for kids!

Are you a beach bum like me? I love travelling the world looking for the best beaches! My idea of a great beach includes a number of factors. I love nice blue water, being able to see my feet when I walk in, warmer temperatures and not too many crazy waves or a strong current. I also enjoy nice soft sand and a few amenities such as a washroom and a place to get some food or drink. A bonus is having the option to rent a beach chair and umbrella, although I usually pack a big beach blanket and can find some shade under a palm tree.

Since I’ve had children, it’s also important to me to find a great beach that is safe for the kids and a place we can stay for hours while they enjoy playing in the sand and water. These beach destinations all make the cut whether you are looking for a family beach vacation, a safe beach for young children, or a relaxing beach to visit on your own, with friends or your significant other.

These are my picks for the best beaches for families…so far!

Tabyana Beach, Roatan, Honduras

Tabyana Beach is located on West Bay Beach, Roatan, Honduras. This beach is one of the nicest beaches in the world. It is absolutely stunning and truly checks all the boxes!

Soft, white sand

Crystal clear, turquoise water

Warm water temperature with barely a ripple.

Amenities including beach chairs, umbrellas, food and washrooms

Tabyana Beach is also closest to the world’s second largest reef, Belize Barrier Reef. With only 70 feet between the beach and the reef, you basically walk right in with your snorkel and be ready to see the most beautiful underwater reef and sea life.

Tabyana Beach is wonderful for children. They can spend hours playing in the soft sand or in the water. As a parent, you will be able to relax because there is no waves or undercurrent at the shoreline. It is truly one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen in the Caribbean and I can’t wait to go back!

2. Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman

Seven Mile Beach is located on the western end of Grand Cayman island. It was voted ‘Caribbean’s Best Beach’ from Caribbean Travel and Life Magazine. If you have a chance to visit this beach, you’ll see why!

Soft, white sand

Crystal clear, turqouise water

Warm water temperature and very calm

Amenities can be found an many of the resorts which are open to the public, including restaurants and beach bars.

6.3 miles (not quite 7 miles as the beach name suggests!) of beautiful beach to explore.

Like Tabyana Beach, Seven Mile Beach is wonderful for children because it is clean and the water is calm. There are also a few small reefs for snorkelling just off shore.

3. Holetown Beach, Barbados

I think almost every beach in Barbados is stunning! We spent most of our time at Holetown Beach. This beach is offers lovely white sand and a nice gentle slope into the clear blue, warm Caribbean water. Great for all ages with excellent swimming, snorkelling or sunning on the beach. There are many places to eat and drink nearby, plus convenient access to all the amenities you need for a fun beach day.

4. Pigeon Point, Tobago

On the tiny island of Tobago, the sister island of Trinidad, you’ll find Pigeon Point beach. The beautiful aquamarine water goes waist deep for many meters, making it a perfect spot for not so confident swimmers. The water is some of the warmest I’ve ever felt, and the waves are very gentle. Hop on a glass bottom boat that will take you to the nearby Buccoo Reef where you’ll see vibrant coral and colourful fish. You can spend time checking out the reef from the boat or snorkelling in the ‘nylon pools’ which are very shallow areas in the reef.

The beach has washroom facilities, restaurants and gift shops. There are plenty of photo opps with the pretty coconut trees and flowers, white sand and cool rock formations. A fantastic family beach destination!

5. Las Cuevas Bay, Trinidad

Las Cuevas Bay is the second most popular beach in Trinidad, after Maracas Beach. Located about 15 minutes from Maracas, the water at this beach is calm and sheltered in the horseshoe shaped bay. It is a great beach to relax with the family, and has amenities including a snack bar and washroom facilities. You must be sure to stop at Maracas Beach for the world renowned local dish called bake and shark which is very popular street-food in Trinidad and Tobago.

6. Poipu Beach, Kauai

You’ll find all the amenities including washrooms, a small playground and a restaurant and store.

7. Magens Bay, St. Thomas

We discovered Magens Bay, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands on a day excursion while on a cruise. Magen’s Bay is known as one of the world’s best beaches and it’s easy to see why! Gorgeous, white sand and crystal clear, turquoise water with barely any waves. This tropical beach is surrounded by coconut trees and lush natural landscapes, offering a fun place for the family to play or relax. All of the amenities can be found including washrooms, change facilities, a restaurant and bar.

8. Sunray Beach, Grand Turk

Sunray Beach is a beautiful beach found right at the cruise ship port in Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos. This cruise ship port and beach has become one of the most popular attractions in Grand Turk, and the Caribbean as a whole, due to the first class beach, dining and shopping destination it offers. Sunray beach is a stretch of lovely white sand and beautiful turquoise waters. The calm, warm water is fun to play and swim in, and the clarity of the water makes for excellent snorkelling. There are many restaurants, bars and shopping nearby, and amenities including washrooms and change facilities.

9. Afteli Beach, Lefkada

If you enjoy travelling off the beaten path to find hidden gems away from the crowds, then you’ll love Afteli Beach in Lefkada, Greece. It is located on the east coast of Lefkada and can be found by travelling 4km off the main road on a very narrow, curvy road through the mountains. Although 4km seems like a short distance, it is a slower drive due to the tiny, winding road. At the end of the road you’ll be rewarded with a stunning, emerald green bay with crystal clear water that changes colours depending on the sunlight. The beach is tiny but has a lot of sunbeds and a shower. Washroom facilities are located in the restaurant and cafe that is right next to the beach. The beach has tiny pebbles to be sure to bring water shoes, but you will enjoy the clear water that barely has any waves. This beach is great for kids because of the gentle waters, lack of strong currents and interesting rocks and pebbles.

10. Makris Gialos Beach, Kefalonia

Known as the most famous, organized beach in Kefalonia, Makris Gialos beach is surrounded by beautiful scenery including green evergreen forest and lovely rock formations. The sand is soft and golden and the Ionian Sea water is crystal clear and blue. This beach is great for families because it offers all of the amenities you need including beach service, lounge chairs, restaurant/bar and washroom facilities.

I know there are SO many fantastic beaches in the world, especially for families and kids. I have yet to visit all of them but my goal is to see as many as possible! What are your favourite beaches in the world to go to with your kids? I’d love to hear from you so I can add to my bucket list. Please leave your suggestions in the comments below.
